‘Beauty’ Grows on Myrtle Avenue

Avenue Merchant Karen’s Body Beautiful Expands with New Space and Products

(Fort Greene/Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, February 27, 2006) - Karen Tappin Saunderson and Damani Saunderson started Karen’s Body Beautiful (KBB), a natural bath and body boutique, more than three years ago out of their home while both were NYC high school teachers. They opened their first storefront in Clinton Hill off Myrtle Avenue just two years ago, and have been thriving ever since. Now they’ve expanded to a larger retail space on Myrtle, hired four new employees, and have no plans to slow down the pace.

“The new space has offered us much more in the way of visibility,” says Karen. “It has been less than a month at the new location and it is amazing how many people have stopped through and said they never noticed us before—and we used to be right around the corner!”

Karen’s Body Beautiful recently relocated to a new storefront at 436 Myrtle Avenue, just a half block from its previous location on Clinton Avenue just north of Myrtle. The new storefront is sleek and modern, with large, open windows and black trim. “We outgrew our former space,” says Karen. “The new space is a big expansion for us. We now have a larger kitchen that allows for increased production, and our walk-in and on-line sales have grown tremendously.”

“Karen has really been one of our model entrepreneurs on the avenue,” added Michael Blaise Backer, executive director of the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership, the area business improvement district and local development corporation. “Karen got her foot in the door and built up her track record in a small, 450-square-foot storefront, just off the main commercial strip, which is all she could afford at the time. Now just two years later, she’s moved to one of our prime blocks in a space that’s more than twice the size. And her new storefront really raises the bar in terms of quality of design.”

Backer noted that Karen has participated in numerous programs available at the Partnership, including the storefront improvement program, energy saving programs, and is spearheading the concept for this year’s new shopping guide.

“We emphasize that beauty and wellness are intertwined,” says Karen. “The skin is the largest organ, and as such, it would behoove us to take care of it by using products that pamper and nourish,” Karen adds. The KBB philosophy is of natural beauty and fragrance, but goes far beyond to ensure ingredients with therapeutic properties. “We offer consultations, and also custom make many of our products. In addition to challenges such as oily, dry and combination skin, we are also able to customize products that address acne, eczema and the entire range of skin and hair care challenges,” offers Damani.

“Be on the lookout for our new product lines and activities,” says Karen excitedly. “We have lots planned,” including the rollout of KBB Baby; Karen’s Home Spa, and even a new pet care line, which is aromatherapy-based and created to repel ticks, fleas, and promote a shiny coat.

“All of our products are handmade in an open kitchen,” Karen says. “We have lots planned for the coming months,” she continues, “be on the lookout for our official grand opening celebration as well as upcoming beauty bars.”

Karen’s Body Beautiful currently has three lines which include:

  • Karen’s Body Beautiful, a women’s line with 20 different products and 24 different fragrances.
  • KBB for Men, 15 products with 12 different fragrances.
  • Extremely popular Aromatherapy Line with 8 different blends.

Karen’s Body Beautiful is located at 436 Myrtle Avenue, between Clinton and Waverly Avenues, and can be reached at 718-797-4808, or online at www.karensbodybeautiful.com.
